Fitting the EOS 5DII with a E1 Hand Strap

I have retired my beloved 1Ds for the much talked about 5DII. We just spent a week in Washington DC which allowed me a perfect opportunity to learn its ergonomics and functions, plus give it a really good workout. The first thing I noticed when I picked it up was how light it is compared to my old 1Ds. This is a good thing, I am currently selling off a lot of my f/2.8 lenses and replacing them with the much lighter f/4 versions. I don't mind the weight in a studio but am finding it tiring on the road.

Even though the 5DII is super light I found it immediately clumsy not having the E1 hand strap. I pulled my old one off the 1Ds and then groaned when I saw the 5DII was not equipped with the thread through attachment point on the base. Here is my solution.

I use a Manfrotto quick release for my cameras. I would imagine other release types would work as well. I simply mounted a 1 inch long standoff onto the quick release plate to secure the strap through. It's pretty easy to do with a drill and tap set. 30 minutes and your up and running. The camera is so much easier to use under difficult conditions like hanging out an airplane window with a heavy lens attached.
